MY TOP 19 BOOKS / MYSTICAL DECKS I READ/WORKED WITH THIS YEAR
Not necessarily published in 2019, and in no particular order…
The Great Cosmic Mother by Monica Sjöö and Barbara Mor - because the religion of the Goddess was the original religion for all of humanity
Wild Mercy by Mirabai Starr - because it's viscerally beautiful and poetic
Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan - because it's humanness we should be striving for, not intelligence
Heirloom by Sarah Owens + Ngoc Minh Ngo - because sourdough pie crust is a thing
Ferment by Holly Davis - because sourdough chocolate cake is also a thing
Noma Guide to Fermentation by René Redzepi and David Zilber - because making your own miso cannot be surpassed by commercially-made miso! (Once you do this, you will not go back!)
Counting Backwards: Poems 1975-2017 by Helen Dunmore - because poetry has this capacity to distill things to their essence
The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff - because we really do live in an age where companies attempt to control every aspect of who we are and what we do, at immense profits
Yantra Wisdom Divination Deck by Chanti Tacoronte-Perez - because this deck really honours the sacred geometrical representation of Goddess energies, and Chanti is a fabulous teacher, artist, and retreat buddy!
Reproduction by Ian Williams - (this year's Giller Prize recipient) - because unexpected connections between lives otherwise separated by race, class, gender and geography is something that can hopefully awaken us to more love
Blood, Bread, and Roses by Judy Grahn - because it is a fascinating realization that menstruation created the world as we know it.
The Double Goddess: Women Sharing Power by Vicki Noble - because the double goddess represents phenomena such as the Earth-Moon pair, the Upper-Underworld pair, Summer and Winter, menstruation and ovulation, and more
Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables by Joshua McFadden - because it is stunning how he forms a narrative that honours seasonal eating and seasonal cooking
Bral Talej, creator unknown - because this large oracle deck is supremely magickal
Holistic Herbal by David Hoffman - because this is both classic and rather essential - the amount of times it's saved me this year is beyond my ten fingers
Misconceptions: Truth, Lies, and the Unexpected on the Journey to Motherhood by Naomi Wolf - because it was one of those "I've been meaning to, but never got around to it...", so I made some time for it!
The Magic of I astrological planner - because I used this often when making plans, and there's so much in this planner!
High Vibrational Beauty by Kerrilyn Palmer + Cindy Diprima Morisse - because radiant food equals radiant skin
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood - technically not the first time I read the book, but it was highly valuable to reread it!
Wishing you a season of SLOWNESS,
Mimi Young founder and Spirit Communicator
